Values reflected through the Surname of Thai Isan People at Borabue Sub-district, Borabue District, Maha Sarakham Province : An Ethnosemantics Analysis

Abstract

Surname is implied as background, origin or human family trait reflecting thought, value as well as culture of people in society. This research aims to study meaning of word units taken to name as surname and value of Thai E-san people in Borabue sub – district, Borabue district, Maha Sarakham Province revealing through surname meaning according to Ethnosemantics framework with 1,989 surnames. The result is found that there are 8 semantic fields arranging from the most to least respectively such as property or valuable things, nature, virtue and prosperity, belief, power, family trait, occupation, object or tool. These sematic fields can be interpreted into 4 values of Thai E-san people for instance, desirable matters in life, belief, occupation, and family relationship. Values are attractively capable of showing cognitive and concept of culture in Isan people.
